Broadband-A cheap alternative
at 9:18 am on Saturday, 27 September 2008
Broadband, another name for high speed internet connection, is capable of transmitting data at a much faster rate than a standard dialup modem connection. It allows you to keep your phone lines free allowing you to make and receive calls while using the Internet. It works on the top of your phone line such as ADSL providing ten times faster data transfer than a dial-up connection. You can now download music, graphics and video quickly in no time at all. So if you are a dial-up user, looking for a faster connection, go for a broadband Internet connection. Earlier with dial-up connections, people had no options but to bear with low speeds, breaking connections, time consuming downloads, and engaged phone lines, etc. But with the coming of broadband, there is a solution to all these problems. Although broadband is costlier than dial-ups, people are opting for it because they have realised the importance of broadband. After the broadband prices came down, its use in homes quickly surpassed dialups. The only change is the change in frequency and duration. Telephone calls can now be made on the Internet and cheap webcams can be used for video chatting. People can now send a quick email, read a quick news article, instantantly access pages on the Net, video on the Net, and even download a lot faster. They don’t have to wait anymore for several minutes to log on to a dial-up account. The wide bandwidth technology is transforming cable TV, internet and telephone connections round the globe. The number of internet service providers are also increasing with broadband making its way to more and more homes. With your broadband connection, you can reduce your expenses and enjoy added features that your conventional phone company could not provide to you at any price. Broadband was initially desired for surfing and downloading speed but today an ever increasing number of people are turning to VOIP( voice over internet protocol). VOIP is a great service and it cuts down the phone bills to nothing.
Most dialup users don’t switch to high-speed Internet thinking it would be too expensive. It is true, the basic subscription is more but there are hundreds of ways to offset the higher cost of broadband Internet service. Moreover, in most cases, the benefits of high speed Internet far outweigh the cost.

Bandwidth Monitoring
at 5:19 am on Friday, 26 September 2008
Why should I monitor my bandwidth I hear you say and exactly what is bandwidth monitoring anyway? Ok. I shall explain why we should keep an eye on our bandwidth along with what information we are looking for whilst monitoring. You see a bandwidth monitor can give you the figures, the transfer data rate and many more details such as which programs on your computer are connecting to the internet. Actually only Bandwidth Vista does show you which country you are connected to but the idea of monitoring your bandwidth remains.
Take a look at your bandwidth monitor software program and then connect to your
favourite download website. Now take a look at the top speed between you and the
remote computer. Keep all other connections closed whilst doing this. The top speed
of data transfers, both upload and download makes up your complete bandwidth usage
on this transaction. This is an accurate way of testing your bandwidth to a specific
location in the world. For instance if you know which country you are connected to
then you can quickly work out the speed between your computer and another computer within
certain boundaries. Another aspect of bandwidth monitoring is to watch for cost! Yes
a lot of users are paying per MB for bandwidth, in fact we all are in a way. Our ISP
does have a cap on how much bandwidth can be used. We rarely encounter problems
however if the ISP is large enough to flex the line, allowing all users to use as
much as they like - to a point anyway. There are many people paying a monthly
bandwidth cost, whether it is for their internet connection or for their web
hosting, bandwidth is a big issue. The general home user can still make use of a
good bandwidth monitor however. For very simple tasks like selecting fastest download servers.
The home computer user should remember that there are also security issues that can be addressed by using a bandwidth monitor. For instance the best bandwidth monitors will alert you to which program has connected to the internet. No point having all those facts and figures if you don’t even know which program is doing the damage! If you know which programs are connected to the internet and how much bandwidth they are using then you can make wise decisions as to which programs are allowed access.

Microsoft Navision Customization and Reporting - Tips For Programmer/IT Specialist
at 7:52 pm on Thursday, 25 September 2008
- C/SIDE (Client/Server Integrated Development Environment) - The core of Navision is the C/SIDE. C/SIDE is the foundation for all the business management functionality of Navision. It is made up of five building blocks, called object types, which are used to create the application. These five object types are shared throughout Navision to create every application area, and give it a unified, consistent interface. This powerful language allows for the internal construction of new business logic and sophisticated reporting. Because of the internal nature of modifications it’s highly recommended that you develop all your code in “processing only” report objects and called from the native code base. By grouping all your code in logical units, upgrades and additional modifications are easier to manage.
- C/ODBC and C/FRONT - Both C/ODBC and C/FRONT enable you to easily use information from Navision in familiar programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. The Open Database Connectivity driver for Navision (C/ODBC) is an application program interface (API) that provides a way for other applications, such as the entire Microsoft Office Suite, to send and retrieve data to and from the Navision database through the ODBC interface.
- External Tool: Navision Developer’s Toolkit - The Navision Developer’s Toolkit enables your Microsoft Certified Business Solutions Partner to upgrade your Navision solution to the latest version. It is used to analyze and upgrade customer and vertical solutions
Reporting Options - Aside from the powerful internal reporting tool which requires an in-depth knowledge of C/SIDE to make it useful the other options are:
- Jet Reports- Jet Reports is a complete reporting package utilizing Microsoft Excel. Using Excel you can create reports on any table of data from within any granule in Navision.
- C/ODBC - Using the ODBC driver, the entire Microsoft office suite and programs such as Crystal Reports can access the database. I would recommend using this tool for occasional reporting requests only. If you need to pull data out of the Navision database on a regular basis one of the other options is a better choice.
- Business Analytics (SQL Server Required) - Using Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) from Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Business Analytics organizes all of your business data into information units called cubes. Using a familiar Microsoft Outlook ® - style interface, Business Analytics presents this information to your desk top where easy to use analytical tools allow you to carry out targeted analysis that is tailored by you, for you
- XBRL - Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) for Navision enables simple and dependable distribution of all a company’s financial information and ensures smooth and accurate data transfer. XBRL is an XML-based specification that uses accepted financial reporting standards and practices to export financial reports across all software and technologies, including the Internet

Go on a Safari Tour this Winter
at 4:10 pm on Wednesday, 24 September 2008
For those men that have never been on a wildlife safari in Africa may find it difficult to imagine the unbelievable wildlife you might often come up close with. The people who come to a wildlife safari are regular holiday makers like you and me, some are into photography, some holiday makers are into Africa as a country but all of them are interested in a new breathtaking experience.
The astonishing thing about a safari is the fact it is so different from a standard holiday to Germany, there are very little kids. Each business will supply an English speaking tourist guide to take you through the terrific areas of Southern Africa. The most popular wildlife you might well see are eagles. The aforementioned mind-blowing animals are not tame and of course don?t touch them. If you are interested in taking photos of the wolves you should make sure you turn off the flash as you do not want to scare the wildlife. The superb animals in Africa might put a grin on your face.
If you would like to identify more about marvellous safari holidays in South Africa you can often use the search engine like Google to behold a safari company that offers holidays from the UK, the prices should range from 300 pounds to eight hundred pounds. Kaingo are more than just a Safari Holidays company, they are the market leaders.

Lotus Notes Domino and Web: Application Development - Tips for Programmers
at 10:31 pm on Sunday, 21 September 2008
Beginning with Domino version R4 it has integration with the Web, and the server itself becomes a HTTP-server. The next releases of Domino Web-server add new functionality (for example servlet managers, supported JVM versions upgrade, etc). To give you general picture and abstracting from details we’ll talk about two major Domino Web-server functions:
1. Domino Web-server is the full-featured HTTP-server. In other words, it can provide static (or conditionally static) files as the reply to HTTP-browser’s requests (including HTML, image, JavaScript, applets, etc);
2. During the browser’s requests to Domino dynamic resources by specific URL, the server can create in passing HTML-pages, making the Domino object visible.
For sure, it is reasonably simplified model (we mentioned that, for example, Domino Web-server supports servlet technology), but this model allows to discuss the major issues in creation of Web-applications based on Lotus Domino technology. Following the major problems are:
• in Domino-based Web-applications creation developer is strongly limited to use built-in program languages’ possibilities. Thus, from 380 inbuilt @-commands of @-formulas language nearly 40 are supported in Web. LotusScript is supported only in three types of Web-agents, etc;
• application security problems. The standard authentication, authorization, coding, digital signatures, etc. mechanisms are simplified in Web or do not work. So SSL + x.509, etc. certificates are to be used in such cases;
• applications efficiency. HTML-pages generation in passing surely takes the server resources, so if the application is poorly constructed, it may cause the server failure. For example, if the first page of the site is generated by an agent, then concurrent request from rather big number of users may cause the service failure situation. Developers are to take care themselves for loading balance putting into different parts often changed and more static data;
• result of HTML-pages generation in passing from Domino resources is not every time obvious. Often such a procedure issues appearance in generated page additional by developer point of view tags (for ex.,
,
,
- , etc). As a consequence, most developers put on Domino only those features which can not implement themselves. If look through the codes of full-blown Web-sites, designed on Domino technology, then, for example, in Domino forms we see only fields, all extern design is based on DHTML.
It is not so bad. There are a lot of sites, supporting large number of users, accessing Domino data. Domino technology from release to release offers new possibilities for Web-design (for ex. JSP custom tag library, inbuilt HTML-editor, etc). The author himself used Domino to create portals with requests with more than 2000 visitors per a day. Summarizing the own and my colleagues experience in Domino Web-design field, I can recommend the following:
• Before creation of Web-project on Domino it is necessary to evaluate the whole Domino infrastructure in frame of concrete organization. If the Domino infrastructure at this company is on opening or initial stage, than Web-design based on Domino is hardly appropriated. The fact that Domino Designer is the environment for rapid application development (RAD), including Web- applications, can not be the reason to create Web-projects on Domino;
• as far as possible allowing to Domino transfer in passing only objects, which can not be or hardly implemented by using other Web-technologies (so-called HTML-design is to be developed by programmers). The author thinks that, if a site needs to operate with Domino data, then to view them it is necessary to avoid the use of standard URL working with Domino objects. In this case exchange of data between site and Domino can be done by using any integration technologies supported by Domino (ex., XML, CORBA, JDBC, etc). In other words, Domino will play a role of data storage and their viewing is to be done by other mechanisms. Implicitly, the issue is confirmed by IBM. In R6 Domino Don’t allow URL open feature may be assigned to databases , so the usage of standard URL Domino is protected in Web-applications;
• attention needs to be paid to Web-application security. Even when your site does not allow non-authorized access to information via Internet, you can expect hackers out there challenging your web-site security;
• only the tested by loading technologies are to used in Web-applications;
• minimize as much as possible the traffic Web-server <-> browser. In Web-design the issue is to be considered that Internet channels are usually narrower than local channels Domino <-> Lotus.

The Differences Between Software Development and Software Engineering
at 4:09 pm on Sunday, 21 September 2008
Software development and software engineering go hand in hand when it comes to the implementation of software. Software development deals more with the creation of the software and when this is complete, software engineering takes over with the creation of software systems. Both of these disciplines are at times interchangeable and without much difference to the layman. If you just want to have one specific piece of software designed, such as database software that will keep track of your bird watching hobby, then you’ll just need software development. If, however, you want your bird watching database to be able to support multiple functions, such as delivering a report with statistics and results, then you’ll more likely need the expertise of software engineering.
Software engineers will implement and design software applications through the use of many mediums. These software applications will then be used for a variety of purposes that include business practices to entertainment purposes. It is these software applications that allow users to make their time on the computer as functional and productive as possible. Types of software applications include language applications, office applications, entertainment packages, and applications for education.
The cost of hiring a software developer will be significantly less than hiring a software engineer. Before you make your final decision about what you want the software to do you need to plan you budget, your timeline, and determine what you want the end result to be. The industry of software development continues to grow each year as more and more businesses are having their own software developed for them that is specific to what they do and what they want the software to do. Most companies will already be using some type of software application, such as Office Suite, and most likely won’t need another application developed for them. For most intents and purposes you’ll be fine hiring a software developer for you and your business needs.

Dashboard Widgets for Windows
at 4:36 pm on Friday, 19 September 2008
For a windows user like me, just can watch with envy the new eye candy features in Mac OS X and wondering how I can have the same feature on my belove windows.
Before Apple introduce dashboard in their latest Mac OS X, most of mac users already can have widget on their desktop using Konfabulator by Pixoria Inc. “Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather.”
And on November 2004, Pixoria has released Konfabulator 1.8 for both Mac and Windows platform and its instantly bringing its renowned OS X-based functions (and widgets!) to the ubiquitous Windows platform. There is a small community in windows user that love to change their default Windows look to Mac OS X and with the availabilty of Konfabulator to run widgets, some of the talented developers has started porting Tiger Dashboard to run on windows using Konfabulator engine and the results is tremendous.
And until today, quite a number of Dashboard Widgets has being ported to run on windows using Konfabulator and other widget engine like Avedesk, Kapsules, and Stardock DesktopX.
But most of the widgets, has being ported to run on Konfabulator because the flexibility of Konfabulator engine to run various kind widgets, just like Tiger Dashboard. Listed below, few popular widgets that has being ported to windows.
1. Dashboard Weather
Here is my first Konfabulator Widget. After seeing a preview of Tiger (particularly Dashboard), reading about a alternative for Windows (Konfabulator) and seeing the great work of Saladin and Ghostwalker, I decided to make my own contribution. So here it is, the konfab clone of the weather widget.
2. World Clock
World Clock Dashboard for Konfabulator. Based on the Konfabulator WorldClock Pro by Ricky.
3. Sticky Notes
Konfabulator clone of the Dashboard stickies with extras

How To Prevent Unwanted Windows Programs From Loading At System Startup
at 10:39 pm on Thursday, 18 September 2008
We all have them in our system tray, programs that load up and use precious memory resources and take up valuable space on your taskbar. Some of them you need, but most you can do without. Take charge and clean them out.
Some of the kinder and well written programs are configurable and allow you to change the settings that starts them up. If this option is available, then this is the best approach.
There are, however, many programs that do not give you the choice and no matter how many times you remove them, they return. Two that I find really annoying are the “Windows Messenger” and the “Quicktime Task”. Both sit in the system tray and I don’t need or want them there. I’ll show you how to get rid of them forever if you have Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000. For those with Windows XP Home, this solution will not work.
First and foremost, however, I’d like to discuss a little gem of a program called Startup Control Panel, written by a young chap called Mike Lin from Boston. The program is available as freeware from www.mlin.net and Mike takes donations from those who want to contribute to his efforts.
This program works under all versions of Windows and is a vital part of any Windows installation. It’s a program that will allow you to control exactly what programs load at system startup. This is one of the first things I install after setting up a computer with Windows. The program can either be loaded as a standalone program or incorporated into your Control Panel. I prefer the latter, but both work equally well.
When you invoke the program, there are a series of tabs across the top. The 4 that you should be concerned about are labelled, “Startup (user)”, “Startup (common)”, “HKLM/Run” and “HKCU/Run”. These represent 4 different methods by which your computer can run programs when the system first starts. There are 3 other tab, which are not as important and are self-explanatory anyway. Note that the tabs may be on 2 levels depending on the windows size. I usually drag the window and make it wider so that all the tabs fit natly across on the page in a line.
Going through each of the 4 tabs, look at the checked items that will run. To stop them from running, uncheck the box. If you are unsure about a program, uncheck it and see what the effects are. You can awlays revise this later if something stops working. As an exercise, run the Windows Task Manager (by hitting the Ctrl, Alt and Del keys simultaneously) and note down how much memory is taken up by your system on a fresh start. The figure is listed on the status bar of the Task Manager under “Mem Usage”. After unchecking all the unwanted programs, restart your system and compare the number and see how much less memory is being used. This is the amount you have saved and all things going well, you’ll notice that your system is snappier and definitely less cluttered.
You will soon find that some programs do not like being unchecked. Yes, you guessed it, the two that I mentioned above, “Windows Messenger” and “Quicktime Task”. They will reappear everytime you delete them. Worry not for there is another way for those running Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro on the NTFS File System.
The NTFS File system comes with security built-in meaning that access to files, folders and programs can be limited. This is precisely the method which we will use to stop these pesky programs from loading.
Open up a Windows Explorer window and navigate to where these programs reside. For “Windows Messenger”, it should be in your “C:\Program Files\Messenger” folder and is called “msmsgs.exe”. Right click on the file and click on the “Security Tab”. The security settings will show. Basically you want to apply the “Deny” access for all users and administrators. Do this by selecting each group and then clicking on the “Deny” checkboxes. When finished, click on the OK and you’re done. The next time you restart the system, this program will be denied access to run. There are many who will rightly point out to me that there is an easier way to do this and that is to run Windows Messenger, navigate to the Tools menu and turn off the startup option. I have done this in the past but find that when a service pack or patch is loaded, that this program sometimes notoriously starts up again, so the Deny option works permanntly. Windows Messenger is a useless program and is superseeded by the MSN Messenger program.
Repeat the same for the Quicktim Task program which you can find by doing a search for “qttask.exe”. You should find it in the “C:\Program Files\Quicktime” folder.
You can deny access to any program that you don’t want to run. This is a powerful method of controlling your environment. It can be reverted by unchecking the Deny boxes at any time.
For those running Windows XP Pro, by default the Security system is disabled. This is easily fixed by opening up “My Computer” and selecting “Tools, Folder Options, View”. The item either last on the list or close to last on the list will read something like “Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)”. Uncheck the box and click OK and your system will now have full security settings on all file or folders. The properties window of any file will then have the “Security” tab.
There is also the possibility that you have a Windows XP Pro system running the FAT32 file system instead of NTFS. The FAT32 file system does not have the in-built security of NTFS and will not allow you to allocate Deny permissions on files, folders or programs. You can however, easily convert the FAT32 file system to NTFS though using tools in XP. To find out how, do a Google search for “convert FAT32 to NTFS”.
I wish you all the best with your computing experiences.

Sudden Power Failure
at 11:10 pm on Thursday, 11 September 2008
Did you have any power problems at your house? Did your refrigerator break last night? Do you have concerns regarding the stuff you had in your freezer?
If this happens, don’t worry because there are easy to follow instructions for food safety.
Food that thaws completely or gets as warm as room temperature should be discarded. Throw it out if it has been sitting at room temperature for longer than two hours.
Make sure to cook the food right away if it’s almost thawed and still a little cold. Foods that have been cooked may then be consumed or refrigerated for later use.
The food can be refrozen if there are still ice crystals visible on it. You can put it in a cooler with some dry ice if no freezer is available. These items will need to be cooked, because your freezer will not offer the same longevity that a normal freezer would offer.
Once food starts to show off the markings of freezer burn they need to be thrown out immediately.
Sudden power outages cannot be avoided, but there are things you can do to prepare for them.
Getting a new Fridge or freezer is a great idea to save energy and replace that old worn out one, giving your kitchen a new look. Definitely consider a large refrigerator/freezer as used in America is if there is space for it. You will find that it can make a big difference with just about any kitchen. A variety of American refrigerators and freezers from many suppliers are listed on this site.
