Prevention Is Better than Cure when it Comes to Litter
at 1:52 am on Thursday, 28 January 2010
Pass around your nearest town or city during the early hours of the daybreak and you’ll meet various applied sweepers meandering around tidying up the litter left from all the shenanigans of the previous night. It’s a typical early daybreak scene, especially the beeping noise! We don’t actually give rubbish a second thought as we feel keeping the streets clean is not our problem.
All the same, there is a subtle yet important influence litter has in terms of determining the mood of people. We are more liable to think a location is lacking law and order if litter is strewn around, and so felons see rubbish as a possible sign for a chance of a mugging or robbery. The very same signal produces some fearfulness in other individuals who worry they might be passing through a more unsafe area and are concerned about possibly being robbed.
There’s also the influence on the aesthetic appeal of an area. Rubbish scattered around can give the visual aspect of a place looking a bit derelict even if it’s only been “abused” by revellers from the previous night. This can hurt the reputation of a neighbourhood if individuals are only within the location for this specific short period of time and only see it in its littered state.
Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to litter. There’s no need to drop litter if there are unfilled rubbish bins within the location. If there are no litter bins, or the rubbish bins that are there are overflowing, this is a problem to address the local council with. Throwing rubbish has a damaging influence on everyone.
